Brown bag lunch: Bringing UX practices to a new (virtual) reality

Abbie Goulet

Moving from a 2D screen to a 3D environment is (literally) a whole new world for designers. With Mark Zuckerberg announcing that Facebook aims to bring 1 billion people into VR, how should 2D screen designers approach this new technology? Abbie, a (2D) UX designer with no prior experience designing for VR, faced this challenge when she was asked to help design a virtual campsite prototype for tent shopping. This talk will focus on the successes and failures of that experience, present new prototyping ideas for VR, and look at applying methods we’ve already learned for screens to virtual reality.

Abbie Goulet

Abbie is a User Experience Designer at Canadian Tire Innovations (CTi) in Kitchener, Ontario, where she conducts user research and testing for physical and digital products, designs app/web interfaces, and creates promotional materials for the lab and corporate events. Abbie has always been fascinated with new technology and excited to meet her user's needs — she knew how to use a mouse before she could walk and became obsessed with UX design when she learned about the user experience of a good push/pull door. In addition to her passion for design and tech, Abbie loves to travel, play acoustic guitar, and write articles on Medium. And she is always up for a coffee!
